Big Sky in Winter | January 2026

Big Sky in Winter | January 2026

Our lackluster snow year continues, much to the dismay of all of us snow lovers. While we’ve received far less snow than normal at Big Sky Resort, we’re still in better shape than many Western ski areas, and we’re grateful for that. Early snowfall, along with several smaller storms throughout December, has provided good coverage and kept a lot of terrain open, even if we haven’t had the powder days we all long for.

One upside to not rushing to the mountain at every opportunity is having time to experience things we don’t often do in the winter. I recently visited the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman to see the rotating exhibit "Becoming Jane", which features Jane Goodall and her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees. While the exhibit has now closed at MOR, I highly recommend seeing it if it appears at a museum near you. Jane Goodall was not only a pioneering woman in science decades ago, but she has also played a significant role in advancing conservation, deepening our understanding of chimp genetics and their similarities to humans, and helping protect a species that may not have survived without intervention.

In addition to its rotating exhibits, the museum has an absolutely incredible permanent collection in the Siebel Dinosaur Complex where nearly all of the fossils were discovered right here in Montana. Our state is rich with dinosaur fossils, petrified wood, and other ancient treasures, and the museum is well worth a visit if you find yourself with extra time while in Montana.

Shifting gears to real estate, after a sluggish start earlier in the year, 2024 ultimately ended with solid numbers. Different price points experienced different outcomes, but overall, increased inventory encouraged more buyers to move forward, allowing sellers to move on to whatever was next for them. While lower snowfall totals have so far affected business levels in Big Sky this winter, we remain optimistic that weather patterns will shift and that strong sales activity will continue.
