"REMEMBER: THIS EMAIL IS YOUR PASS." That line comes from the Madison Valley Ski Club's road pass page. It explains how this winter's Jack Creek Road pass works: you print an email and display it on your windshield. Before that email arrives, though, you need something else. The application opened Oct. 19. It doesn't ask for your gate preference or your vehicle first. It asks for proof that someone in your household already bought a Big Sky Resort season product.
The countdown to winter on the short road starts with a lift ticket, and that ticket has its own deadline. All of this falls in the same five weeks Ennis spends on rifle season.
The road pass depends on a lift pass
Membership in the Madison Valley Ski Club, or MVSC, is what gets you onto Jack Creek Road in winter. It's open to Big Sky season passholders who live in Madison County and are over 18. At least one member of your family has to buy the resort lift product. The 2026–27 MVSC membership is $575 and covers the length of the Big Sky Resort winter season.
That makes the resort's calendar the first date to circle. Big Sky Resort's season pass page advertises its best price of the season for purchases made by midnight on Nov. 5. As of late October, the adult Blue pass shows at $1,120. Rates vary by pass and age, and the resort says to add 4% tax. Put the two programs together and an adult Blue holder pays $575 for road access on top of a pass that costs nearly twice that before tax. Waiting past Nov. 5 raises the bigger of the two numbers.
The application lists one exception. A non-skiing parent whose child will take part in M-BAR-T doesn't need an adult season pass to get road access for the child's ski days. M-BAR-T is Big Sky Resort's good-student pass. It covers grades 1 through 12 in five counties, Madison County among them, and requires a 3.0 GPA at a participating school or through a homeschool testing service. The resort lists M-BAR-T Black at $560 and Blue at $335, plus an optional $525 tram add-on. Eligibility depends on each school's first grading period, and the resort says students can visit Mountain Services after Nov. 23. That puts the student route on a tighter schedule than the adult one, only two days before opening.
What goes in the application
The MVSC form asks for paperwork that most households have on hand but rarely gather in one place.
- Contact information, driver's license number, physical address and phone number for every applicant, up to two adults
- A receipt for the qualifying resort product, or a copy of the season pass
- Digital copies of each applicant's driver's license
- Vehicle insurance ID cards, with a maximum of two vehicles per pass
- Proof of residency or ownership in Madison County, such as your tax record from the Montana Cadastral site, a recent utility or water bill, or a lease showing your physical address
You pay by credit card through the Ennis Chamber's MVSC payments link. Three automated confirmations follow: a success message when the form arrives, an email when your documents are approved, and the pass email itself once payment clears.
The timing detail that matters most is this one. Applications received by Nov. 22 are guaranteed processing before Opening Day on Nov. 25. Later applications are handled within 48 hours, Monday through Friday, in the order received. Anything that arrives on a Friday after 2 p.m. counts as received Monday. Nov. 22 is a Sunday, and opening day is the Wednesday after it. Missing the cutoff by a weekend doesn't lose you the season. It can mean your first trip that week goes the long way.
Why the short road is worth $575
The Bozeman Daily Chronicle describes the private section as a gated stretch of about 10 miles, owned by Moonlight Basin. A Chronicle reporter drove it in a Toyota Tacoma in four-wheel drive and averaged about 20 mph over unpaved road with steep inclines, tight turns and continuous snow cover that day. For comparison, Visit Big Sky puts the public drive between Big Sky and Ennis at roughly 83 miles and 1 hour 45 minutes, on a route that circles Gallatin Peak.
Slow miles still beat a loop around a mountain range. The program's rules are written for that kind of road.
Drivers are strongly advised to drive a vehicle that is equipped for off-road winter conditions. (4WD/AWD/Winter Tires). Drivers use the Jack Creek Road at their own risk.
Drivers who break down or get stuck have to arrange a tow right away. The pass works in only one listed vehicle at a time and has to stay on the windshield. Sharing the pass or the gate code revokes access for everyone involved, and using the road without a valid pass counts as trespassing. The MVSC pass is for winter recreation at Big Sky Resort only, and using it to commute to work ends it without a refund. Workers use a separate contractor pass, which costs $500 a month or $125 a week per vehicle and is subject to approval. If the season ends early because of a resort-wide closure, MVSC access ends with it, and members get a credit toward a future pass based on the share of the season lost.
The road has also come up in public debate. In February 2025, Madison County commissioners held a work session in Virginia City on the idea of acquiring Jack Creek Road through eminent domain, as Explore Big Sky reported. They heard public comment and made no decision. The 2026–27 pass pages still describe the road as private and require approval in advance.
These program terms are general information, not legal or financial advice. Read the full rules and usage agreement on roadpass.org before you apply, and confirm anything specific to your household with the club.
The same five weeks belong to the hunt
All of that paperwork runs through the middle of rifle season. Montana FWP's 2026 general deer and elk season opened Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 29. The Ennis Chamber holds its Hunters Feed every year on the Friday before the opener. This year that was Oct. 23 on Main Street, with wild-game entries judged as Best Chili, Best Not Chili, Best Professional Cook, Best Novice Cook and a People's Choice vote at Peter T's Park. Winners were announced at Willie's Distillery, followed by the 11th Annual Critter Call competition. The Jack Creek Preserve Foundation also scheduled its elk-hunt raffle drawing for the feed. The foundation manages a 4,500-acre preserve on Jack Creek Road that links two units of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. So the road's name was part of Ennis's hunting calendar before it became part of the ski calendar.
The river runs on its own schedule. Montana Angler's Oct. 16 report called the Upper Madison near Ennis a consistent producer, with small baetis emergers, smaller dry flies and winged ants among the tactics noted. FWP's 2026 fishing regulations put the Madison under Central District exceptions, with reach-specific catch-and-release, lure, hook and boat rules.
The week both seasons share
Here's how the dates line up from now through the first week of December.
| Date | What happens | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Nov. 5, midnight | Big Sky's best season pass price ends | Big Sky Resort |
| Nov. 22, Sunday | Last day for guaranteed MVSC processing before opening | Madison Valley Ski Club |
| After Nov. 23 | M-BAR-T students can visit Mountain Services | Big Sky Resort |
| Nov. 25, Wednesday | Big Sky Resort opens, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. | Big Sky Resort |
| Nov. 27–28 | Ennis Shop Small Weekend on Main Street | Southwest Montana Tourism |
| Nov. 29, Sunday | General deer and elk season closes | Montana FWP |
| Dec. 4 | Ennis Spirit of Christmas Stroll | Ennis Chamber |
Big Sky's opening day falls the day before Thanksgiving, and regular daily operations run through April 11, 2027. That means the last weekend of rifle season is also the first weekend of ski season. Shop Small Weekend lands on the same Friday and Saturday, running 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street, with a passport challenge and a $5 charity donation.
The following Friday, Dec. 4, is the Spirit of Christmas Stroll, from 3 to 7 p.m. Santa is at Ennis Pharmacy at 5, the Lions Park lights go on at 5:30 and the light parade starts down Main Street at 6:30. The program also lists a gingerbread-house competition at Madison Valley Library, carolers and refreshments at Lighthouse Fellowship Church, and music at Burnt Tree Brewery, Silver Dollar and Longbranch. By then, the hunt is over and the gate has been open to passholders for nine days.
